Diverdan54almost 3 years agoHAVE LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROVE THAT THEY LISTEN TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS
The Township has a relatively strong record of asking the citizens of the Township for their opinions. For example, the request for feedback from the public on the Draft of the Waterfront Development Plan. More recently, and more broadly, the creation of the Speak-Up web portal. But after soliciting our input, do our local officials ever read and consider it, and heaven forbid, respond to it? Take the example of the Waterfront Development Plan. I believe the Township received a considerable number of submissions, all of which likely contained at least 3 or 4 suggestions. We probably had a total of 200 or more specific suggestions to the plan. Yet I saw no means of accessing these or even determining which might have been accepted, or rejected, or the rationale for either. For my part, I submitted a three-page submission with several suggestions, including the rationale for them. Being innately skeptical, I called the Township to ascertain what would be done with my submission. I was informed that it would “be kept on file for the consultant to look at later. Hardly reassuring! I did review the Revised Plan and I do think I saw a whisper of one of my suggestions having been added. But I think we deserve a bit more than that. This is what I suggest: When public submissions are solicited, there should be a documented review process. In the case of the Waterfront Project, I expect the review process would have needed to include the consulting firm who prepared the report, members of Township staff for their specific expertise, and one or more members of council, for accountability. The review process should have included a compilation of all the suggestions submitted (including perhaps the name of the submitter), the approval or rejection decision, and a brief rationale for the decision. The final review process report should then be made public via posting on the Township web site. The above process could be easily replicated for suggestions received via the “Speak-Up” portal. Please note that, by asking for publishing of all submissions and decisions, I am not suggesting or trying to incite endless Township-wide debate on issues. We would never get anything done if we allowed that. Our elected representatives are there to make decisions on our behalf. That is why the presence of a member of Council on the review process is critical as only they are truly accountable to the electorate. If we don’t like their opinions, we can take action at the next election. But if Council is going to ask our opinion, they have a responsibility to listen, and to show us that they have listened.

Long Sault and Ingleside were towns that were largely ‘created’ in one of the continent’s biggest endeavours! The Lost Villages captures a lot of this story, though inherent in the title, the bias is toward that of the (undeniable) loss of the time. There’s likely another huge story that could be captured and promoted as part of the region’s story; one of how planners and developers ‘created’ two communities - something that is a rare occurrence. This facet would appear to be a local bit of unique history that has not been captured in promotion of the region. How many other communities can boast about this? What it must have been like to create and continue to develop upon two new settlements! The area might benefit from an enunciated positive, growth-oriented and novel beginning in its marketing that is anchored it its unique history. The towns were seeded by an influx of homes that were carried and planted, and then the towns blossomed from there and continue to flower.

80 kph (+) is what folks entering Long Sault and Ingleside experience when entering. Given the number of camping trailers etc and the curves at the Ingleside entrance, it might be kinder to reduce the speed on the overpasses to 60 kph. We want to be to be as welcoming and safe as possible. The loss in making this change is minimal as the speed lowers to 50 when the overpass lowers toward the south. Stay safe and happy out there, folks!

My son has been asking me to request a Skate Park in this ideas forum. It’s a great hobby for kids to have that doesn’t cost much for equipment. Attached is a photo of Brockville’s amazing Skate Park. Please consider this idea for our community.
