May 4–10, 2025 | Plan for Every Season
Each year, the first full week of May marks Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada, a time when individuals, families, and communities are encouraged to take steps toward being better prepared for emergencies of all kinds.
At the April 23rd Regular Council Meeting, South Stormont Council officially proclaimed May 4–10, 2025 as Emergency Preparedness Week in the Township. This year’s theme continues to emphasize the importance of seasonal readiness with “Plan for Every Season.” While we can’t predict the weather, we can prepare for what each season might bring, be it floods, storms, heatwaves, or power outages.
As each season brings its own unique challenges, the steps to prepare don’t have to be overwhelming. By taking action in advance, such as clearing gutters, checking emergency kits, and creating evacuation plans, you help keep your home and loved ones safe.
Explore the information below and on the right-hand side of this page to learn how to keep your household safe and ready year-round.
Seasonal Emergency Planning: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Spring: Flood-Ready Starts at Home
With snowmelt and spring rains, South Stormont homes are at a higher risk of flooding.
Be proactive:
Confirm your sump pump is in working order, and invest in a backup power source.
Keep gutters, storm drains, and basement drains clear of leaves and debris.
Move important documents and valuables out of the basement, or store them in watertight containers.
Never drive or walk through floodwaters, turn around, don’t drown.
Summer: When Temperatures Rise, Stay Cool and Safe
Extreme heat and power outages can pose serious risks, especially to children, seniors, and pets.
Here’s how to stay safe:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Wear light-coloured, breathable clothing and stay indoors during peak heat (10 a.m.–2 p.m.).
Prepare your home: open windows for a breeze at night, close curtains during the day.
Check in on neighbours, and remember: heat stroke is a medical emergency, call 911 if needed.
Fall: A Season of Prep
Autumn is your chance to prepare for both the approaching winter and spring.
Clean out eavestroughs and ditches to prevent spring flooding.
Inspect and maintain your furnace, chimney, and heating appliances.
Stock up or update your emergency kit and vehicle supplies.
Trim overhanging branches that may become hazardous with snow or ice.
Winter: Storm-Ready Means Power-Ready
South Stormont winters can bring heavy snow, ice, and widespread outages.
Be prepared before the next storm hits:
Limit travel during storms and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
Never use outdoor appliances indoors (generators, barbecues, etc.).
Have extra blankets, flashlights, batteries, and alternate heat sources on hand.
Shovel with care, take breaks and don’t overexert yourself.
Pets Are Family Too
Emergencies can be just as stressful for your furry companions. Make a pet plan:
Make sure your pets have ID; tags or microchips are key if separated.
Pack a go-bag with food, water, medications, leash, crate, and comfort items.
Identify pet-friendly places to stay in case of evacuation; friends, family, or hotels.
